Bronisława Wajs (Papusza) was the first Roma poet in Poland to have her poems published in Romani. Despite the contempt with which she was treated by Roma after the publication in 1956 of the first bilingual volume of poems Pieśni Papuszy / Papušakre gila (‘Papusza’s Songs’), with the Polish translation by Jerzy Ficowski, other Roma poets followed her example.
