Pierluigi (Gigi) De Donno wurde 1982 in Maglie in Italien geboren. 2006 schloss er sein Studium der Kommunikationswissenschaften an der Universität von Perugia ab. Im Jahr 2009 erlangte er einen weiteren Abschluss, und zwar in Kino-, Fernseh- und Multimediaproduktion an der Universität Bologna.

Während seines Studiums gründete De Donno die unabhängige Filmproduktionsfirma FREIM. Zusätzlich zu seiner Regie- und Produzententätigkeit hat er in den letzten Jahren auch als Kameramann, Cutter, Castingleiter, Autor und Produktionsassistent gearbeitet. Er ist Gründer und Organisator des Filmfestivals Meditate et Erra auf dem italienischen Castello di Otranto (2007, Lecce).

Er ist Autor und Produzent der Dokumentarfilme »Old Cinema – Bologna Melodrama« (2010) und »Brustulein – cinema to munch on at the cinema« (2009). Des Weiteren war er Koautor und Produzent des Dokumentarfilms »Gitanistan – The Imaginary Status of the Roma Families in Salento« (2014), einer Dokumentation über Roma-Fleischer und -Pferdehändler. Obwohl De Donno in Salento geboren und aufgewachsen ist, wusste er lange nichts von der Existenz dieser ganz besonderen Roma-Familien, von denen seine Filme handeln. Er wollte die unsichtbare Kraft dieser Mikrogemeinde in Salento mit ihren berühmten Metzger- und Pferdehändlertraditionen zeigen.

Pierluigi De Donno war auch Koautor und Produzent für die Dokumentation »The Beautiful Louis, history of art, anarchy and cheats« (2014).
