Zu Tony Gatlifs Vorfahren zählten sowohl Algerier_innen als auch Roma – beide Kulturen sind reiche Inspirationsquellen für seine künstlerische Arbeit. 1948 in Algerien als Kind von Roma-Eltern spanischer Herkunft geboren, erhielt Michel Dahamani (bekannt als Tony Gatlif) später eine Ausbildung an der L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Obwohl er in Frankreich lebt, kehrt Gatlif in Rückbesinnung auf seine wahren Wurzeln immer wieder zur Gemeinde der Roma und Sinti zurück. Von seinem zweiten Spielfilm »La Terre au Ventre« (Frankreich, 1978), der Bezug auf den Algerienkrieg nimmt, bis hin zu »Les Princes« (Frankreich, 1982), einer kompromisslosen Beschreibung von Roma und Sinti in einem seelenlosen Vorort, liegt der Fokus von Gatlifs frühem Werk auf der unromantischen Lebenswirklichkeit von Roma und Sinti.
Seine späteren Arbeiten, inklusive der hochgelobten Filme »Latcho Drom« (Frankreich, 1993) und »Gadjo Dilo« (Rumänien/Frankreich, 1997), sind »lebendige Lieder«, die die Roma-Kultur feiern. In den Filmen wird der Schwerpunkt auf die lebhafte traditionelle Musik gelegt, die der Gemeinschaft der Roma und Sinti Leben einhaucht.
