The transition to democracy in Poland after 1989 created unique opportunities for direct political involvement of Polish Roma. Andrzej Mirga was a candidate to the Polish Parliament in 1993 Elections with the Unia Demokratyczna political party; he was one of two Roma, along Stanisław Stankiewicz, who ever stood for parliamentary elections in Poland.
