The essay comprises the first part of the foreword to the catalogue of Ceija Stojka’s artworks, Auschwitz ist mein Mantel: Bilder und Texte [Auschwitz Is My Coat]. It provides a unique depiction of life in the interwar period, during which Ceija Stojka travelled throughout Austria with her family as they followed work and social opportunities. The narrative unveils specifically Lovaran customs and practices related to setting up camp, cooking, cleanliness, natural medicinal remedies, childbirth and childcare, as well as attitudes towards nature and other Austrian citizens and ethnic groups.
The text appears to have been written by Ceija Stojka herself but was told orally to Christa Stippinger, who wrote down the narrative as an autobiographical text by Ceija Stojka.
