The absence of the minority language Romanes in the printed media is partially responsible for the invisibility of Roma culture. By transforming the functionality of media such as newspapers, magazines, posters, we acknowledge the fragility of the Roma minority who are super exposed to the global media production. Estetika Walk aims to counteract the fossilized images of the Roma in Swiss and European societies by a multiplicity of embodiments. Becoming liquid is the role model here. It stands for the recognition of the Roma subtext running through all levels of society.
Estetika Walk is a performance designed for a catwalk. Portable art made from printed media such as newspapers, magazines, and posters were made into creative, fragile garments presented by 10 models. Estetika Walk strives to mobilize transformative forces in a spirit of “Becoming Minority - Becoming Roma”. The portable pieces were made from material which had lost its original function and meaning. Through this act of embodiment and reappropriation, the Romanes language was transformed and brought into visibility.
