Narcissus: performance for the camera, 01’ 38”
Reflection on today’s pathologic narcissism as a symptom of our age with the help of a basic gesture that has become a cliché, respectively by replacing the mythological mirror with its modern equivalent, the camera. Deconstructing the heroic ego: in this video I look into the camera while I also see my ownreflection on the other side of the window. I can look myself into the eye and also gaze into the camera, while the viewer looks me into the eye as I am looking into my own eyes. Through the most intimate gesture of the vane ego, I lay bare in front of the viewer.
Using the reflections of the window both the interior (the room) and the exterior appear, as my inner and outer conditions with connection to reality. In the gesture of looking into someone’s eyes silence plays a relevant part: the inner sound created by blinking and its collision with the outer spaces.
