Although originally from the Czech Republic, she grew up in northern Spain, a country that very much marked her upbringing. She completed her bachelor’s degree in Spanish and English philology at the University of Oviedo, and then continued her graduate studies in the United States, receiving a master’s from Miami University, Ohio, and a PhD at Georgetown University with a dissertation on ‘The spectral figure of the Gypsy in Spanish cinema’ (2016). In 2015 she participated in the summer course ‘Performing Romani Identities’ at the Central European University, which played an important role in her work. She has been teaching courses on Spanish cinema, literature, culture, history and language at Georgetown University and the George Washington University.
