Zlatko Mladenov was born in Pernik, Bulgaria in 1959. Since the 1990s he has been one of Bulgaria’s most committed Romani activists, working for various NGOs and from 1997 onwards for the Roma organisation ‘Kupate’. Mladenov became director of the ‘Saint George’ Romani centre in Sofia, founded in 2003, and was a member of the executive board of the International Romani Union from 2000 to 2007. An excellent narrator and an expert in the language and culture of his community he, together with the language teacher Hristo Kyuchukov, drew up a short grammar of the Bulgarian Kalderash dialect. Zlatko Mladenov lives in Sofia.
