Artur Conka’s photo series continues his thought provoking exploration of the facets of Roma life. Through his photographs and film, which focus on the inclusive practices on food preparation in the Roma home, Conka documents the making of meals for sharing-some recipes Roma and some not. By showing us the pride and care with which these families cook display their food Conka offers insight into the home lives if Roma with an intimacy and consideration that we rarely see beyond difference to the common actions of domesticity that unities us all. Conka’s photography has focused on the plight of Roma, Gypsies and travellers in Europe. As a Roma, himself he feels that it is important to give his community, so long without influence or consideration by those in power; a voice. Artur came to Britain in 1998 as an 8-year-old migrant. He returned to his roots in the former Czechoslovakia to document the environment and. More importantly, the people of Lunik IX housing estate in Kosice, Slovakia, where he had spent several years before its tragic decline into Slovakia’s largest ghetto.
