Kodály’s Dances from Galánta for orchestra, composed in 1933 on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Budapest Philharmonic Society, goes back directly to the music of Roma. Kodály’s model is a music collection published around 1800 in Vienna. It contains dances that he had heard in the small town of Galánta. The work impresses with furious rotating figures, rhapsodic structures, hymn-like ascents and mysterious cantilenas.
